via Rookie docs may get shorter shifts – Health care- msnbc.com.  so….it has taken the “powers-that-be” 25+ years to come to this conclusion…this started with the LIBBY ZION case at COLUMBIA in 1984..i went thru the “trial by fire”  as an intern working up to 128 hours in one week..it was not pleasant, but it sure built character and self-confidence…we basically had NO attending supervision when on call and consulted with other residents and fellows..a lot of the work and time was unnecessary but it greatly enhanced learning..i remember fellow residents at “private” hospitals who could not make a decision unless it was approved by the attending…the grueling opposite (long hours with little supervision) is equally onerous..but in view of patient safety—YES!!!!
